The Horseradish Theatre
about us
We are a Studio-Theatre that invites the audience to think, question, and feel. Instead of offering predictable answers, we spark sharp, unexpected conversations. Guided by Pushkin’s idea of “True Emotion and Genuine Passion,” we bring our stories to life with honesty - and our creative motto is simple: “Here and Now.”
To create a metropolitan-level theatre in Vancouver where seasoned professionals work side by side with passionate community members and emerging talents. We bring a vibrant East European theatrical tradition into the city’s diverse cultural landscape, training our actors in the Vakhtangov method and striving to contribute our own confident, authentic voice to Vancouver’s multicultural ecosystem.

We intentionally invest a great deal of time and energy into developing each production - not only because we genuinely enjoy the process as much as the final result, but also because we believe that true simplicity and ease become meaningful only when they emerge from something complex. This is how we achieve that natural sense of freedom on stage, allowing the audience to feel the truth of the emotions and become co-creators in our exploration of life.

A cozy hotel room. He. She. A romantic evening…
What could possibly go wrong?
Well…just about everything!

The Prime Minister’s assistant plans a secret night with the opposition leader’s secretary in a hotel room. But their plans are suddenly interrupted by a stranger who needs to be dealt with urgently. What starts as a private, romantic evening turns into a series of funny events, expertly written by the author into a perfect example of comedic brilliance. The Horseradish Theatre brings the perfect comedy to spark your holiday spirit. This show will have you laughing until your cheeks hurt and might even give you those elusive abs from all the belly laughs!

Number 13
The Horseradish Theatre celebrates its second anniversary with Vassa - a powerful play by Maxim Gorky.

We are used to thinking that history was shaped by men. But was a woman’s role truly limited to quietly accepting her fate — or is there more to the story?
Vassa explores the place of a woman at pivotal moments in history: when society splits into “us” and “them,” when the old ways are no longer possible, and the new path is still unclear. In such times, a woman becomes the foundation holding together a rapidly polarizing world.
If she falls, it may signal the end not only of a family — but of an entire era.
Premiered October 2025

Production Team:
“The Arsonists” was the very first production by The HorseRadish Theatre. It is based on the play by Swiss dramatist Max Frisch, written in 1953. The author himself described it paradoxically as a “didactic play without a moral.”

It tells the story of ordinary, peaceful people who go about their daily lives and only occasionally react to troubling news — while reading the paper or having a drink with friends at the bar.

Meanwhile, night after night, another house somewhere in the city goes up in flames. But as long as one remains hospitable and cautious, it will always be someone else’s house…

Our Team
  • Elena Tungusova
    Producer & Actress
    Originally from Vladivostok.
She worked with the Vyazemsky People’s Theatre under the direction of Natalia Yakutina, the student sketch theatre Ampersand, and has participated in various theatre projects in Vancouver.

"I wanted Vancouver to have the opportunity to enjoy truly professional productions — with proper stage lighting, thoughtfully curated props and set design, and bold, unexpected directorial choices. I believe in having many theatres, in healthy competition, and in continuous professional growth."

  • Andrii Krupnyk
    Director & Actor
    Originally from Odesa.
He graduated from the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute. His productions there included Krechinsky’s Wedding, The Caretaker, Noah’s Ark at Eight, The Accompanist, among others. He also works in film, narrates audiobooks, and teaches in theatre studios.

"I would love to infect as many people as possible with my passion for the art of theatre. To do that, I’ll keep trying to cultivate a new ‘dangerous’ strain of Vancouver actors — highly contagious in the best sense — who bring the same serious, professional approach to theatre that was instilled in me during my own training and work on stage.”
